Quickly Quotable #24 – Nationalism

Heroism on command, senseless violence, and all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism – how passionately I hate them!  ~Albert Einstein

Our country is not the only thing to which we owe our allegiance.  It is also owed to justice and to humanity.  Patriotism consists not in waving the flag, but in striving that our country shall be righteous as well as strong.  ~James Bryce

Each man must for himself alone decide what is right and what is wrong, which course is patriotic and which isn’t.  You cannot shirk this and be a man.  To decide against your conviction is to be an unqualified and excusable traitor, both to yourself and to your country, let men label you as they may.  ~Mark Twain

  1. Thought provoking. Good post, Jodi.

  2. Thank you! I wish the people who really need to understand this message take a moment to consider it, but I’m not hopeful.

  3. Excellent post, Jodi!

    Along the same lines:

We need a society where the motive for the economic system is not corporate profit but the welfare of people. ~ Howard Zinn

  4. I agree that we see too many people worshipping the “idea of America” at its surface rather than the bedrock ideals that have actually made the country successful. The flag shouldn’t be some wallpaper that says “we’re better than you,” but an icon that reminds us of core principles – freedom being only one among many including termperance and (voluntary and widespread) charity.

  5. Thank you all for reading and considering the quotes.

I choose these quotes instead of specific 9/11 quotes because nationalism does not center around one specific nation or event. It’s not enough to have pride for one’s country, one must demonstrate that pride by electing the right people and speaking out against bad or outdated policies.

    Everyone do your part!
